Vice President, Focus on the Family Marriage Institute

Robert received his Bachelor’s Degree from Evangel University, his Master’s Degree from Georgia State University, and a Diploma in Christian Counseling and an honorary doctorate from Psychological Studies Institute. He holds a license in the states of Missouri, Georgia, and Michigan as a Professional Counselor. He is an accomplished speaker who presents regularly at professional conferences and enrichment events both nationally and internationally.

He has appeared on numerous radio and television programs and has co-authored four books including; The DNA of Relationships, with Drs. Gary and Greg Smalley, The DNA of Relationships for Couples with Dr. Greg Smalley, and  9 Lies That Will Destroy Your Marriage – and the Truths That Will Save It and Set It Free with Dr. Greg Smalley.

Robert and his wife, Jenni, live in Springfield, Missouri, have been married for over 40 years. They have four children and six grandchildren.

Dr. Brett Sparks is a licensed psychologist who joined the team in 2003 after his service as a staff psychologist in the U.S. Navy. He is an Intensive therapist as well as the Clinical Director over all sites. It is his desire to serve Christ and see marriages and individuals thrive. He has experienced the challenges and joys of marriage to his wife, Jennifer, since their journey began in 1993. They have three young adult children, two daughters and a son, preparing for and pursuing their vocations.

Ryan Pannell is a Licensed Marital and Family Therapist and a licensed minister. Prior to coming to Focus on the Family, he was the Director of Counseling at Doulos Ministries in Branson, Missouri, for 6 years. Previously, Ryan was the founder and director of the Woodland Hills Counseling Center in Branson. He was also a Baptist minister in Oklahoma for 6 years before entering the counseling profession. Ryan and his wife Brenda have been married since 1996 and have 1 daughter, 3 sons and a son-in-law.

Sarah is a multi-state Licensed Professional Counselor who has counseled couples and individuals for over a decade. She has a specific heart for intimacy issues and is a Certified Sex Therapist, holding specialized training from the Institute for Sexual Wholeness. Sarah loves the therapeutic context that Hope Restored provides for marriages, and deeply believes in the work that happens in intensives. She enjoys engaging people in the reality of the richness of God’s plan, and how He flips brokenness for His glory. Prior to joining the Focus team, she was in private practice at the Winning at Home Wellness Center. She and her husband, Lance, have been married since 2003, and have three children.

Dana Sutton joined the Focus on the Family team in 2013. Dana is thrilled to be working with the Intensives. Her desire is to see marriages find healing through Christ and to restore their hearts and relationships. Along with her husband, Jonathan, Dana has worked in ministry for the past 14 years, including church planting and a ministry to the public schools. They have travelled internationally for the past three years working with missionaries and their marriages. Jonathan and Dana met at Auburn University and married in 2000, and have four wonderful children.

Aaron is a multi-state Licensed Professional Counselor as well as a licensed minister. In addition to over 20 years of professional counseling, he served in pastoral ministry for 8 years. Aaron has had the opportunity to work in private practice and pastoral counseling settings as well as community mental health centers. Aaron has a real passion to see God's redemptive work done in marriages and has led multiple small groups and ministries for marriages in his local church. In coming to Hope Restored, he is excited to see God work miracles in the lives of the couples who come and bring life to places that seemed dead. Aaron and his wife, Teri, have been married since 1999 and have two children - one daughter and one son.

Jen is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Missouri and Texas. She is passionate about helping people heal individually and relationally. Prior to taking the role of Site Clinical Director in Texas, Jen ran a counseling practice where she specialized in trauma and marriage counseling. She has been privileged to serve military and first responders, as she was once a military wife, and her husband, Mark, recently retired from a law enforcement career. Jen and Mark currently reside with their fur family in the Texas Hill Country.

Jenny received her Master of Arts Degree in Counseling with a concentration in Marriage and Family therapy. Families have been the focus of her ministry and she feels privileged to be allowed to journey beside couples as they experience God’s miraculous healing powers. She has been married to her husband, Rick, since 1991 with three children and adding to their family as the Lord blesses. They currently live in Springfield, MO.

Richard (Rick) earned his Bachelor’s degree in Pastoral Ministry from Central Bible College and his Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Concordia University, Irvine. Additionally, he is a licensed minister and a contract counselor at Synergy Counseling Center in Springfield Missouri. He has spent most of his adult life in youth ministry. His desire is for all to find hope and healing. He firmly believes in the power of the counseling relationship in that it has the potential to provide insight, change, and overall mental health wellness. He hopes his personal and professional experiences can be an aid to clients. He and his wife Jenny have been married since 1991. Together, they have a growing family with adult children, grandchildren, and a dog named Belle.

Jason is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas, focusing on trauma, individual, and marriage/family relationships. Jason is a former police officer and army veteran who felt called to counseling after experiencing the impacts of trauma individually and with his family. Jason has a passion for working with couples and helping them thrive as individuals and as a couple. In addition to being a part of Hope Restored, Jason practices at New Solutions Counseling and Trauma Center in Southlake Texas. Jason works with multiple local and Federal First Responder Agencies throughout the DFW Metroplex. He has been married to his wife, Annalise, since 2012 and together they have two children.

Karen is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who has been practicing for 10 years. She is certified in EMDR and EMDR-IFS informed therapy modalities. She offers both virtual and in-office appointments. Karen has been married for 33 years. She and her husband volunteer for Adventures in Marriage, where they serve as marriage workshop facilitators. They are empty nesters and live with their two senior dogs.

April and her husband of over 20 years, Randy, and two teenagers live just outside Indianapolis.

As a marriage intensive therapist since 2005, Verlette loves journeying alongside individuals and couples on the way to healing, restoration and reconnection. She received her Master of Arts in Counseling from the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary in 1995 and is a licensed professional counselor. Having also been a licensed minister, youth pastor, and then a counselor for families in crisis, she is dedicated to assist couples in healing and rebuilding from the inevitable struggles of life. Verlette and her husband Chris were married in 1999 and are devoted to their two precious daughters.

Her heartfelt desire is to come alongside individuals and couples as they journey towards healing. She is passionate about seeing marriages restored through the grace of God and is thrilled to have the honor of joining God where he is actively at work in Hope Restored intensives. Sunshine has been married to her husband Kevin since 1997. Together they have served the body of Christ in several ways, including youth ministry, church planting, foster care, and raising nine really cool kids!

Ken Bryant has a Ph.D. in Counselor Education from the University of North Texas-Denton, an M.S. in Counseling from Pittsburg State University, a B.A.in Psychology from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and a B.A. in Biblical Literature for Ozark Christian College. Ken is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Missouri and Colorado and a National Certified Counselor. Ken serves as the Founder/President of Oak Tree Marriage & Family Ministries. He served as a church pastor for over 30 years. Ken and his wife, Carol, have been married since 1970 and have been blessed with four sons, four daughters-in-law, and have grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Dr. Bob Burbee has more than 3 7 years of experience as a licensed psychologist working with individuals, couples, families, and groups. As one of Focus on the Family Marriage Institute (FMI) therapists Bob leads both Group Intensives and Private Marriage Intensives. In addition to his therapy responsibilities Bob provides leadership in training other therapists in Focus Marital Therapy. Dr. Burbee has been involved with Intensive programs since 2000 and was part of the team at Smalley Relationship Center that helped support Robert Paul in developing the Intensive programs. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in psychology. Marriage and family issues have long been an area of special interest for Dr. Burbee, and he speaks frequently to groups on these topics in seminars, retreats, and workshops. Bob and his wife Mary Jo are active in their church contributing to children and family ministries including facilitating occasional adult education offerings. Bob and Mary Jo have four grown children and reside in Springfield, Missouri.

Lisa has been married to her husband Charlie since 1998. Lisa and Charlie have two boys and reside in Springfield. Lisa has a MA degree in Educational Psychology and an Educational Specialist degree in school psychology from the University of Colorado-Denver. Lisa worked as a school psychologist in Colorado for over 15 years until her family moved to Missouri. Lisa is a Licensed Professional Counselor. She provides counseling and she teaches her own parenting curriculum, Positive & Powerful Christian Parenting at McGuire Christian Counseling. Lisa has been a part of the Hope Restored ministry since 2018. She considers it a privilege to come alongside couples on their healing journey.

Wendy is a LPC in the state of Georgia. Her Master's Degree is from Georgia State University in 2002 and has been practicing in the Atlanta area since that time. From 2002-2010 Wendy worked as a therapist with Still Waters Counseling Center. She was also certified by the National Child Advocacy Center as a Forensic Interviewer of Children and was contracted by law enforcement to conduct forensic interviews. In 2011, Wendy became the founder of Georgia Christian Counseling, Inc. Wendy has been married to Rich since 1999, and they have 3 children.

Joannie DeBrito is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with a broad range of experiences over 36 years of clinical practice. While Joannie has knowledge and skills in many areas of mental health, her two areas of specialty are marriage and family therapy and trauma assessment and intervention. She has also had the privilege of training and supervising many Marriage and Family Therapists. As a compassionate caregiver, Joannie strives to further the ministry of Jesus Christ, glorify God in all that she does, teach skills for healthy living and provide care with respect to grace and truth. Joannie lives in Colorado Springs with her husband of over 45 years, near her two daughters and their husbands and two wonderful grandchildren (with hopefully more on the way!)

As a therapist, Silvia has enjoyed success working with high conflict relationships, bringing healing and hope to many families, marriages and individuals desiring restoration. She has also ministered to the Hispanic community as the keynote speaker, in Spanish, at conferences. “I love the concept of grace and forgiveness and the healing power it has in our lives.” Currently, Silvia lives in the beautiful Midwest with her imperfect husband & best friend of 23 years and is the mother of three lovely young ladies.

Jason Franklin is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the State of Missouri. He attained his Master's in Counseling, with an emphasis on Marriage/family and children therapy, at the University of Phoenix in Fresno California. Jason served his country in the United States Army as a chaplain's assistant in the Guard. His love for spiritual enrichment for the soldiers, paired with the position of a security officer in a mental health hospital spurred him to enter the mental health field. Jason has a deep passion to work one-on-one with couples and individuals, as well as present lectures to large audiences. Jason has a certificate in Abusive Traumatic and Emotionally Destructive Marriages and Relationships (ATEM). Jason lives in Ozark with his wife of 17 years, Andrea, and their two boys Trevor and Tucker. Jason loves to study the Bible and therapy curricula, as well as take care of his chickens with his wife and play disc golf and video games with his sons.

Butch served as an appointed overseas missionary for 35 years, during which time, he has been named to various leadership roles, including overseeing the member care arm of a large denominational missions agency. Butch and his wife, Pam, have two children and four grandsons.

He currently serves as an Intensive Therapist with Hope Restored and has a private practice where he has worked with marriage since 2005. Prior to private practice Joel worked in hospice and end of life care where he was blessed to journey with patients and families through one of the most intimate times of life. Joel and his wife, Heather, live in Iowa and keep busy with the activities of their 9 children. One of Joel's passions is to journey with couples as the healing power of Jesus Christ transforms hearts and minds.

Kathy received her bachelor’s degree from Western Kentucky University, her master’s degree from Liberty University, and holds certification as a First-Responder Counselor. Kathy is a licensed therapist in the states of Kentucky and Georgia. In her private practice, she specializes in pre-marriage and marriage counseling, working with couples in an intensive format. Kathy and her husband, Adam, have conducted marriage conferences and facilitated marriage retreats over the past 12 years. They have been married for 27 years and have five children who accompany them in ministry.

Kashina Harris is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Missouri. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Education from Drury University and spent the beginning part of her career as an elementary school teacher in a classroom full of first grade students. It was in that classroom that her desire to help the students and families with more than academics became so evident. This passion led her to receiving her Master's in School Counseling from Lindenwood University in 2017 and a Master's in Counseling from Lindenwood University in 2018. In her first five years of counseling, Kashina worked with highly trained Christian counselors with over 30 years of experience providing her with experience in multiple clinical settings and extensive knowledge in many areas of psychotherapy. In 2021, she started It Is Well Counseling to partner with clients and offer trans-formative experiences by providing an environment that is safe and authentic. She feels honored to be a part of the Focus on the Family team and to meet couples dedicated to restoring their marriages. Kashina and her husband of thirteen years, Ryan, enjoy the learning process of parenting their four children together and enjoying every moment.

She also maintains certifications in addictions, supervision, and the treatment for sexual offenders. She teaches Master of Arts in Counseling courses at Spring Arbor University and is the Practicum and Internship Coordinator for the counseling program. She and her husband, Louis, have 4 children and two cats. In her free time, she enjoys spending time outdoors, being active and making memories. Pam is a licensed professional counselor and board certified coach. In her private practice, Hazell Christian Counseling and Coaching, LLC, she specializes in counseling and coaching for adults and marriages. Pam sees clients at Woodland Hills Family Church and also provides virtual counseling and coaching. Pam retired in 2020 from the Branson School District, serving twenty-five years as an elementary teacher and counselor. As a therapist at Hope Restored, Pam loves to see how God does miracles turning marriages around, creating healthy families for children. Pam has been married to her husband Gary since 1997. They have two grown sons, two amazing daughter-in-laws and two grandchildren. Gary and Pam enjoy camping, traveling, and spending time with family on Table Rock Lake.

Dr. Judith is an Arizona licensed therapist. She has Master’s in Professional Counseling and Substance Abuse Counseling. She is certified as a trauma professional and a National Certified Counselor. Dr. Judith has served in pastoral ministry, recovery centers, marriage ministries and private practice for over 20 years. I am excited to be a part of the Hope Restored team. I myself, was once “like a wife deserted and wounded in spirit, like the rejected wife” (Is 54). My passion is to spread the good news, integrating my faith and Christian worldview with solid counseling models resulting in strong vibrant relationships.

Nate received his bachelor’s degree in Christian Ministry and later a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Messiah University. He is a multi-state Licensed Professional Counselor. He began his counseling career in the PA Family Based system before moving to private practice. Those opportunities have allowed Nate the opportunity to work with many different individuals, families, and couples. It is a great blessing and privilege that God has brought Nate to be part of the Focus team. Nate desires to walk alongside couples and help them experience the healing that comes through Jesus Christ. Nate has been married to his wife Jessie since 2001, and they have two sons.

William Hemphill is a licensed professional counselor in the state of Georgia. He received his Masters of Divinity from Emory University and Masters of Mental Health Counseling from Georgia State University. In addition to working with Focus on the Family, he sees individuals and couples at Faith and Family Empowerment in Metro Atlanta, GA. William has spent the past thirty years working in various ministry settings from college ministry to chaplaincy and pastoring. He believes that a strong marriage is the foundation of the family, which in turn is the foundation of a strong society. Nothing brings him more joy than to see the lives of couples transformed by God’s grace. William married his wife Cheryl in 1995 and they have three children. In his free time, William enjoys traveling with his wife and children.

Dr. Dan Henderson is in his fourth decade of clinical psychology practice. He received his BA from Wheaton College (IL) with a major in psychology, and his Masters and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Missouri—St. Louis. He is a fully licensed psychologist in Michigan. Among his clinical interests throughout his career have been couples therapy and recovery from trauma. He is inspired by couples who have the courage to confront marital problems and work to heal and strengthen their relationship with one another and the Lord. Dan and his wife Diane have been married 14 years and share together 6 married children and 15 grandchildren. They enjoy spending evenings on their small lake, and hiking in the woods.

She previously spent 14 years as a high school counselor and, more recently, as a therapist in private practice with Eaglecrest Counseling in Springfield, MO. She has a passion for helping couples find healing in their marriage relationships and considers it a blessing to work with couples through Hope Restored Marriage Intensives. She and her husband Ted lived in many areas of the United States during his career with the National Park Service. Calling Table Rock Lake in MO their home now, they love spending time with their 3 daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren, and friends.

Prior to joining the Hope Restored team of therapists, she worked at a private alcohol treatment center as the relational counselor and for the Cobb County Behavioral Health Crisis Center as a therapist. She currently is a counselor for Thriveworks Woodstock where she works with individuals and couples. Additionally, she is active with her church serving as a youth coach with a small group of 11th grade high school girls. She thrives on seeing lives changed and marriages renewed.

She founded the Marriage Center of Indiana, a private practice specializing in couples and individual therapy and trauma. Her desire is to see clients equipped with effective tools for healthy relationships, supportive parenting and healing from past and present hurts and trauma. She is trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and CAPS-5 for PTSD, Brainspotting, the Gottman Method and Prepare Enrich. She is also a board approved Supervisor for undergraduate and graduate students working toward licensure. Alma has provided counseling services in several capacities to include work with individuals and couples, premarital counseling, marriage therapy and affair recovery. Additionally, Alma has a background in crisis intervention and works with women, families, parent coaching and family repair work. More recently, Alma has incorporated EMDR therapy into her work with individuals who desire to heal from trauma and other distressing life experiences. Rebekah graduated from Richmont Graduate University with a Masters of Clinical Mental Health in May 2024 and is currently seeing clients in a private practice in Cartersville, GA. She had the opportunity to observe the Hope Restored marriage intensives as a part of her Master’s program internship and is thrilled to be a part of the remarkable work and life change at Hope Restored intensives. While Rebekah is new to counseling professionally, she has over 15 years of experience in church and international ministry. Through that ministry experience, she discovered that she loves to journey with people into their stories and help them to identify ways to know who they are and to grow more into the person they were created to be. Rebekah lives in Georgia with her husband and three children. You can usually find them watching movies, playing board games, or carting the children to their various activities!

Janet earned her master’s degree in Counseling Psychology, from Spring Arbor University. She also earned a second Master’s in Ministry Leadership from Grand Rapids Theological Seminary. She is a licensed professional counselor and a master’s level licensed psychologist in the state of Michigan. She and her husband Terence have 2 adult children and two grandchildren. In her free time she enjoys traveling and ministering with her husband. Janet feels very blessed to be able to be a part of Focus on the Family by coming alongside couples as they journey towards the divine design God had in mind! .

Michael Todd Wilson is a Licensed Professional Counselor in both Georgia and Florida, as well as a Certified Sex Therapist with the American Board of Christian Sex Therapists. In addition to nearly 30 years of experience, he has authored three Christian books: two related to sexuality and one promoting healthy self-care among ministry leaders. Michael Todd specializes in working with individuals and marriages in the areas of sexual integrity recovery and overall marital health. He and his wife live in Rome, Georgia with their two kids and the friendliest standard poodle you will ever meet.

Linda White Claybrook is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Prior to coming to Focus on the Family, she worked for Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MO., as an Employee Assistant Specialist and a Behavioral Clinician for sixteen years. Linda has provided therapeutic and counseling services to adults and children in the Branson and Springfield areas for the past twenty-eight years. Linda is especially grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the ministry of Hope Restored and enjoys sharing her love for the Lord. Linda has also enjoyed the privilege of working alongside her late husband, Thomas White, as a pastor’s wife for most of the forty-nine years of marriage. Linda has three children, nine grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. Linda also shares her joy with us in her recent marriage to a dear Christian man, JR Claybrook.

As a graduate of both the University of Georgia and Colorado Christian University, Nick loves having the opportunity to serve couples as a Professional Counselor in his home state of GA. Prior to joining the Hope Restored team of therapists, Nick was privileged to work with Focus on the Family in Colorado Springs before returning home to the south. Having worked with the ministry for two plus decades, Nick has been given the opportunity to come alongside hurting individuals and families. As a man, husband, and father of three, Nick is passionate about meeting people exactly where they are in their journey and helping them to navigate the culture in which we live. Outside the therapy room, you’ll find him cheering on his favorite teams, enjoying a good meal, and spending time with his family going on new adventures together.

Kathy Wingo, EdD, LPC, LMFT

Kathy earned her Masters and Doctorate degrees in Counselor Education from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. She is licensed as both a Marriage and Family Therapist as well as a Licensed Professional Counselor. Her counseling work began as an elementary school counselor in 1985 and after five years, she transitioned to work in private practice for many years. Kathy joined the Focus team in 2015. and considers it an honor to come alongside couples in their time of need. Kathy and her husband Richard have been married since 1994 and have one grown son.

Annie Viers is a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and is an LPC/LMFT clinical supervisor for Master’s Level Associates who are accruing their practice hours for Texas licensure. Annie currently serves on the board for the San Antonio Association of Relational Therapists. Along with her colleagues, Annie enjoys spending time outside the office speaking on a variety of mental health and wellness topics to the community and other professionals. In her free time, she enjoys traveling with her family, sharing a meal with her lifelong friends and antiquing around the hill country.

Her ability to work with individuals, couples, groups and families to help create a safe and respectful environment, provides a platform for healing and growth through life's challenges.
